An introduction to the ketogenic diet

What is the ketogenic diet?

A ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, and high-fat diet that helps the body to burn fat as its primary function. It has many positive effects on health, starting from natural weight loss – if necessary – to recovery from metabolic syndromes and chronic diseases. Practitioners of the ketogenic lifestyle usually report that their constant feeling of hunger has stopped, they can concentrate better, their brain function has improved, their general well-being has improved, and they live their everyday life with an increased energy level. All this thanks to the fat-adapted operation.

Nowadays, not only nutritional consultants and forward-thinking dietitians, but also many doctors use the ketogenic diet as a natural remedy, even in the case of serious diseases such as epilepsy or cancer.

The question is, can a healthy body also benefit from this way of eating? The answer is yes. Our natural state is ketosis, it is no coincidence that we were all born in ketosis and as children, even with a well-functioning organism, we switched to this fat-burning mode more easily.

The body can basically obtain energy from two macronutrients: From carbohydrate or fat (glucose or ketone)

1. Carbohydrates are not optimal fuel for the human body because:

  • not a stable energy source
  • generates glycation end products (accelerates aging processes)
  • causes more oxidative stress to the body
  • can mess up the hormonal balance
  • it overworks and exhausts the vital organs
  • cannot provide the vital, i.e. essential amino acids, fatty acids and micronutrients required to maintain our health

2. If we get energy from lipids and fats, then:

  • we provide a stable source of energy for our body (we can even manage a 20,000-calorie “snack pack”)
  • we can slow down the wheel of time, we can keep our youth longer
  • less AGEs (advanced glycation end products) are created
  • we can regulate our hormone balance, since our body can produce hormones from fat and cholesterol
  • we supply our body not only with energy, but with all important nutrients
  • we can fix and heal organ under- and over-functioning, as well as diseases resulting from improperly chosen nutrition, such as fatty liver or insulin resistance.

The ketogenic diet is currently the most effective anti-inflammatory diet, and the ketones produced by the liver provide our body, including the brain, with the cleanest energy, so that we can be in the best shape not only in the gym, but also in our everyday life.

Those who have already experienced the positive effects of this lifestyle no longer think periodically about their health, diet plans and cheats, because they can eat the foods they really and truly want – both mentally and physically – and live a quality life that we we all deserve it too.
