Types of the ketogenic diet
In the state of ketosis, the body’s main fuel is fat and ketone bodies produced during fat metabolism. As a result of the ketogenic diet, blood sugar and insulin levels decrease, which is why the body is able to obtain energy from fatty acids and ketone bodies. Which way you get the benefits of ketosis? It depends only on you and your state of health!
Therapeutic ketogenic
The first publication (which was published in 1921) forms the basis of the entire diet. Specifically, it came into the spotlight for the first time after the First World War, as seizures occurred less frequently in epileptic patients as a result of starvation. Later, with the spread of antiepileptic meds, its popularity unfortunately decreased, but since every fourth person has seizures even with drug therapy, it came to the fore again over time, and a few decades later, other physiological effects began to be researched, and the results exceeded all expectations. As a result of extremely high fat and low carbohydrate intake, the level of gamma-amino-butyrate in the cerebrospinal fluid increases, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and the cell membranes stabilize, thus reducing the number of seizures.
Classic ketogenic
It is a more permissive form than the above diet, which is easier to implement, yet its therapeutic effect is more moderate, but it is excellent for shaping the body composition, and enables faster, starvation-free weight loss, with minimal muscle loss. The problem is that it is easy to be tempted, to be more permissive, since we can farm with a lot of raw materials, and there is no one more creative than a dieter. If we are too indulgent with ourselves, the tongue of the scales can easily tip in the wrong direction. However, with sufficient awareness, we can enjoy many advantages:
- better cognitive abilities
- inflammation reduction
- reversal of insulin resistance and type II diabetes
- more beautiful, hydrated skin, hair, nails
- optimizing body composition
- more energy, less brain fog
- improving blood pressure
Comfort ketogenic - the creativity of keto people is really endless!
Many people look down on comfort ketos, but this trend also has a right to exist and its benefits. There are many social life situations that threaten ketosis, thus the achievement of our goals. Think of holidays, birthdays, weddings, barbecues, soccer games, vacations, camping trips. It can be an incredibly lonely feeling when you’re sitting at the end of a family dinner and everyone else is happily shoveling a dessert and you’re just watching. Or you eat the cookie and then feel guilty and all that comes with carbohydrate metabolism. What if you didn’t have to suffer? Because you too can be a part of the social experience without having to give up your diet! This is what the comfort ketogenic is for, with the emphasis on occasionality.
Vegetable ketogenic
The ketotarian diet, i.e. a diet rich in vegetables and abundant in good fats, has the same proportions as the macronutrient ratios of the traditional ketogenic diet, which range from the following range:
5-10% carbohydrates 10-20% protein 70-80% fat. The plant-based ketogenic diet is a solution for those who want to enjoy the positive physiological effects of the ketogenic lifestyle, but want to skip or minimize the consumption of animal-based foods.
Carnivore diet
It contains food from the “animal kingdom” and rejects plant sources. It is also called Zero Carb, but this is inaccurate, as, for example, liver and egg yolk also contain some carbohydrates. A more accurate name is perhaps Zero Plant Food, but several trends have emerged where a functionally minimal amount of plant food is also accepted. Which is the most optimal? It depends on the individual, which is why we recommend that you be flexible and boldly experiment.
Primal diet
It is the strictest trend, but it is no accident, since Primal is a complex biohacking method, a functional, regenerative lifestyle, the primary goal of which is to activate and support the body’s self-healing system, but it also has a great effect on body composition, and also excels in anti-aging. Instead of counting calories, it focuses on the quality of the food and urges us to eat until we are full. The nutritional trend itself is a moderate protein, high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet based on ketogenic proportions, which is made up of raw and minimally processed foods. It also considers potential toxins in food to be avoided, such as lectins, oxalates, pesticides and herbicides, as well as added sugars and hydrogenated oils.
How do you choose?
Whichever trend you vote for, you will do a lot for your health with each of them, but it is important to prioritize: In all cases, we recommend that the improvement and preservation of your health should be the primary goal, and only then should the rest come, since it forms the basis of everything. Of course, we are not saying that you should immediately jump into the strictest ketogenic diet, but always strive for better, cleaner, more conscious nutrition!
