Benefits of the ketogenic diet

During a ketogenic lifestyle, the body’s energy needs are covered by fats, so our metabolic state changes, i.e. we enter ketosis. Carbohydrates are not essential food, i.e. our body can produce them from protein itself. This process is called gluconeogenesis.

What are the benefits of following a ketogenic diet?

Weight loss

If we are in ketosis, our body is able to convert our fat stores into energy with high efficiency, we can improve the quality and speed up the change in body composition. Losing weight is also made easier by the fact that our insulin (the hormone responsible for storage, among other things) levels are stably low, thereby reducing storage and facilitating fat loss. It also helps us that ketone bodies have a hunger-suppressing effect, so we don’t have to deal with the gnawing feeling of hunger during the diet.

Reducing inflammations

The ketogenic diet excludes many inflammatory foods, and ketone bodies, specifically BHB, have a natural anti-inflammatory effect. Specifically, it reduces the activity of the NLRP3 gene, thanks to which it has a positive effect:

  • for type 2 diabetes
  • to atherosclerosis
  • to multiple sclerosis
  • for Alzheimer’s disease
  • to age-related functional decline
  • for gout
  • to autoimmune processes

Optimizing cholesterol levels

Several studies show that a low-carb diet improves heart disease risk factors, including the cholesterol profile, which includes high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. Total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels are usually moderately affected.

Reversal of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance

Studies prove that the ketogenic diet is excellent for the treatment of type II diabetes, and can even lead to the complete elimination of the disease. In the best case, it is so effective that the blood sugar level is normalized in the long term without medication. However, if someone returns to the lifestyle that caused the disease, the problems are likely to return over time.

Creating hormonal balance

Our hormones interact with each other, so if you develop resistance to one, it affects the others as well. However, with our lifestyle, we can consciously influence and restore hormone production and the sensitivity of cells, thus creating the optimal balance.

Improved cognitive abilities and energy levels

Cognitive abilities represent intellectual functioning, through them we are able to perceive and understand the immediate reality that is present and affects us and the reality that is not present at the moment. Cognitive abilities cover our entire mental functioning, so it is especially important to get the most out of them, since they are one of the most basic segments of our work and everyday life.

In addition to a correctly executed ketogenic diet, perception, perception, attention, memory, imagination, and thinking improve, since ketone bodies provide our brain and nervous system with quality energy even in the long term.

Alleviation of neurological problems

The main cause of many neurological and neurodegenerative diseases is a high level of inflammation, leaky gut syndrome and a poor state of the microbiome. A well-executed ketogenic diet can mitigate and restore all of these, and thus an improvement in condition can be achieved.
